KJAR calls for solidarity with Warisha Moradi on indefinite hunger strike in Evin Prison

KJAR calls on activist women, resistance fighters, pro-freedom communities, national and international organisations and institutions to support Kurdish political activist Warisha Moradi on indefinite hunger strike in Iran's Evin Prison.

Kurdish activist Warisha Moradi, who is in Tehran's Evin prison, went on an indefinite hunger strike on 10 October on World Day against the Death Penalty to protest against the death penalty in Iran and her own prolonged detention.

Warisha Moradi, also known as Ciwana Sine, was arrested on 1 August 2023 during a police check near her hometown of Sine (Sanandaj) and taken to an unknown location. Iran's regime judiciary accuses her of "enmity towards God" and "armed rebellion against the state". The allegations are related to Moradi's membership in the KJAR, the umbrella organization of the Kurdish women's movement in Iran, and her commitment to women's and feminist issues. Tehran sees the KJAR as a "separatist terrorist organization" because it is said to be part of the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK).

The Free Women's Community of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) released a statement calling for solidarity with Warisha Moradi, stating the following:

“The Third World War continues in the Middle East in different stages. This war continues with the abolition of moral boundaries by nation-states that recognise no borders. These wars represent the absence of democracy as an expression of the bloodshed and the suffering of the peoples of the region, especially women. Fascism in the region and its consequences are only a genocide.

The Iranian regime is one of the nation-states that for years has been trying to silence internal opposition and wage a war that has spread outside the country. This politics is a representation of a completely male-dominated mentality, and its main aim is the construction of power.

In this context, the interests of the state are prioritised over the interests of the people and social classes. This state, which is daily driven by new fatwas, laws and projects, is based on gender discrimination, nationalism and religion. Their aim is to destroy social will and impose silence.

The state endeavours to secure its sovereignty and has used violence and bloodshed as a method to achieve this. The society weakened by the government has made the unity of the peoples and especially the voice of women in prisons a source of fear in the heart of the government.

The ongoing dissatisfaction and the international support for the pro-freedom circles have further intimidated the regime. Attempts to silence the pro-freedom forces in prisons and the imposition of silence outside are an attempt to cover up this silencing.

Physical and psychological pressures and the imposition of death sentences have increased every day in the past year. However, this pressure and torture have no effect on the women in prison. Our comrade Warisha Moradi is one of the leading women imprisoned in the autumn of 2023 and is currently being held in Evin Prison.

Our comrade is subjected to psychological torture and is not allowed to meet with her lawyers or her family. However, despite the increasing pressure and torture, she is constantly trying to make her voice and the voices of other political prisoners heard in society. On many occasions, she has shared her letters against the death penalty regarding Sharifah Mohammedi and Pakshan Azizi, and together with all women, she has opposed the death penalty in every way. For this reason, on the World Day Against the Death Penalty, she wrote a letter from Evin Prison to draw attention to the current situation and started a hunger strike action against the attacks against freedom fighters. Publicising this action is a necessity to take part in the global struggle against the death penalty and a stand against the repressive policy of the Iranian regime.

Our comrade Warisha Moradi is the voice of society. She is especially the voice of the working women who are subjected to the attacks of the Islamic regime of Iran every day, but also the voice of all women struggling for freedom. We, the Free Women's Community of Eastern Kurdistan, appeal to all activist women, resistance fighters, pro-freedom communities, national and international organisations and institutions: stand by our comrade and support her, be the voice of the people. Do not allow the Islamic regime of Iran to cover up its crimes outside the country in the name of war in order to end this cruel policy based on the death penalty.”
