Kurdish political prisoner transferred without justification, family fears new charges

The political prisoner’s abrupt transfer to Orumiyeh Central Prison and renewed interrogation – despite the fact that his sentence is final – has alarmed his family, who fear that fabricated and new charges may be brought against him.

Hiwa Bahin, a Kurdish political prisoner serving a six-month sentence in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, has been transferred to Urmia (Orumiyeh) Central Prison without legal justification, raising concerns about possible further prosecution, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) reported.

Bahin, who was being held in Bukan Prison, was transferred to Urmia Central Prison about 10 days ago without prior notice.

In a short phone call to his family, Bahin confirmed the move and said he had faced fresh interrogation in Orumiyeh Central Prison, according to the KHRN.

Bahin, from Bukan, was arrested on 24 November 2024 after being summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence office in the city and taken to the Ministry’s detention facility in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province.

After initial interrogation at the detention facility in Orumiyeh, he was sent to Bukan Prison, and on 1 December 2024 he was provisionally released on bail of six billion rials (around 6,000 USD) pending trial.

During his detention, he was denied the right to family visits and legal representation.

In December 2024, Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court of Bukan, headed by Judge Fakhri, convicted Bahin of “propaganda against the state” and sentenced him to six months in prison.

On 26 February 2025, after being summoned to the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Bukan, he was rearrested and sent to the city prison to serve his sentence.
