The Democratic Union Party (PYD) Co-Chair Salih Muslim spoke to ANHA about the agreement concluded between Ankara and Baghdad on 15 August 2024.
Salih Muslim said, “There is no end to the games in the Ottoman Empire” and likened the agreement between Iraq and Turkey to the Adana Agreement signed between Turkey and Syria in 1998. Salih Muslim said, “The Adana Agreement signed by the Turkish state with Syria in 1998 is an example of this. They are still using this agreement. The agreement signed between Iraq and Turkey on 15 August is similar to this. They make agreements behind secret doors. What they are doing now is included in the content of the agreements. This agreement is a game played on the peoples.”
Iraq's sovereignty is violated with this agreement
Remarking that Iraq's sovereignty was completely violated with this agreement, Salih Muslim said: “Their lands have been occupied, and they say to the Turkish state, ‘Let's sign an agreement’. They legitimise the occupation by the Turkish state. They have already violated the sovereignty of Southern Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) as a whole. This agreement drives Southern Kurdistan into a corner. It opens the door to the regions controlled by the Turkish state. Shengal will be lost, and demographic changes will be made.”
Turkey aims to destroy all Kurds in the New Greater Middle East Project
Referring to Turkey's anti-Kurdish policy, Salih Muslim said that the aim is to destroy the Kurds. Drawing attention to the dangers faced by the Kurds, Salih Muslim continued: “It is not a matter of a party or a part of Kurdistan, but the existence or non-existence of Kurds. The Turkish state aims to destroy all Kurds in the New Greater Middle East Project. It has been planning this until now and wants to realise its unrealised plans. The Misak-ı Milli (National Pact) is one of these plans. This plan is against all Kurds. To this end, it eats its words. It swallows its words after what it said against the Damascus government. This is because the plan to destroy the Kurds has not been realised. The issue is not just Rojava or a party. The issue is the existence or non-existence of the Kurds.”
Stating that the people and Kurdish parties should take a common stance as soon as possible, Salih Muslim concluded, “The Kurdish people should be sensitive to these plans and agreements. In order to frustrate these plans, unity is necessary. This is the duty of all parties, so our voice and attitude must be united.”
