Deniz Serxwebûn Garzan is a fighter of the Eastern Kurdistan Defense Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Rojhilata Kurdistan, YRK). He joined the guerrillas in Northern Kurdistan and fought against the ISIS in Kobanê. He describes his motivation and the current situation and calls for broad resistance. When asked how he came to join the guerrillas, he answers, "I got to know the movement through my family. Since my family was patriotic, I connected with the party more easily. The martyrs from my tribe also had an impact on my decision to join the movement. The resistance and courage of the martyrs awakened in me the desire to join the freedom movement.

I joined the organization in 2014, but then war broke out around Kobanê. Of course, that was a very difficult time. Because we were confronted with the enemy from the very first step and moved into the war zone without any training. There we gained a lot of experience and professionalism. We were able to gain this war experience thanks to our leading friends and the martyrs. Facing the enemy, there was only either our destruction or the liberation of our country. There was no other way."

"We fight for our people"

Garzan recalls a companion who fought alongside him in Kobanê: "It was Heval Deniz who supported us in the most difficult times. That is why I took the name Deniz. Heval Deniz was from northern Kurdistan. He was known for his determination, his dedicated participation and his humility. Heval Deniz was a role model for us with his tenacity and dedication to life. He said, 'If you really want to be part of the organization, you must understand the reality of the martyrs and the companionship in this organization.' Therefore, we promise to avenge all our martyrs. We will win the people's revolutionary war together with our people. As a YRK guerrilla fighter, it is my duty to strongly respond to and stop all attacks against our movement and leader. We are fighting for our country, our people, our identity and our culture."

"Whatever may come, we will liberate our country"

Garzan calls for broad resistance and says: "People of all religions and worldviews, all those who talk about socialism and democracy, who consider themselves humanists, should listen to their conscience and join the guerrilla ranks to defend Kurdistan. For a free country and the freedom of Leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan), it is necessary to join the freedom movement of Kurdistan. The enemy is waging a special war against our youth and wants to remove our young people from their reality. Everyone must stand against these attacks and come to the revolutionary areas. No matter what happens, we will free Leader Apo and do everything that must be done for the freedom of our people. We will fight to the last drop of our blood. This is the duty that falls to us towards Leader Apo and our country. Whatever happens, we will free our country from the enemy. No power can prevent that. As Seyid Riza said, 'Our grandchildren will see a free Kurdistan.' We are also fighting for this."
