Iran and US reach agreement over prisoners

Iran announced that it has reached an agreement to release Iranian detainees in the United States in exchange for the release of American detainees in Evin prison in Tehran.
According to a news published by Irna news agency, "5 Iranian prisoners held in the US and 5 US prisoners held in Iran will be exchanged."
Iranian-American citizens Siamak Namazi, Emad Sharqi, Morad Tahbaz and another unnamed detainee left Evin prison on Thursday and were sent to house arrest. The release of another US detainee was reportedly part of the negotiations. The fifth detainee in the agreement had been placed under house arrest a few weeks ago.
The Irna agency confirmed this information, citing Iran's mission at the UN.
All of the detained US citizens are of Iranian descent. Iran, on the other hand, does not recognize dual citizenship and has not established diplomatic relations with the United States since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
This agreement came after intense secret talks between Iran and the United States. Iran confirmed in June that it was in indirect negotiations with the United States, mediated by Oman.
According to a source close to the talks, the negotiations focused on transferring $6 billion in Iranian funds frozen in South Korea to a special account in Qatar. It was stated that Iran can only use the funds transferred to Qatar for humanitarian aid purchases such as food and medicine.
According to Irna, "significant amounts of Iranian funds in Iraqi bank TBI" can also be transferred. The agency also announced the start of the process of transferring Iranian funds frozen in a European bank.
Citing a reliable source, the official news agency Irna stated that "the prisoner exchange will not take place until the released money is deposited into the accounts specified by Iran".
The Iranian judicial authorities reported that in August 2022, dozens of Iranian people, including Reza Sarhangpur and Kambiz Attar Kashani, were arrested on charges of "violating American sanctions" against Tehran.
