Women demonstrate in Istanbul, demanding ‘budget for women, not for war’

As part of 25 November events, TJA held a press statement in Esenyurt, reacting against the budget allocated by the government for the war and calling for struggle against femicide.

Events continue on the occasion of 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Following the call of the Free Women's Movement (TJA), women gathered in Istanbul Esenyurt’s district on Sunday, displaying banners that read ‘We are in struggle for our freedom’, ‘Trustees are the usurpation of women's will’, ‘Long live women’s struggle’ and ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, life, freedom).

Speaking during the protest organised under the slogan ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî against male state violence’, Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Amed (Diyarbakır) MP Ceylan Akça drew attention to the fact that the 2025 budget was allocated for war. “The budget goes to defence, but women are being killed by male violence in these streets and houses,” Akça said and emphasised that the budget should be used for women instead.

Akça continued: “Misogyny has spread across borders. It is vital to increase solidarity to confront it. While our party and the women's movement highlight the need for an equal budget and protection of women, the government continues to appoint trustees. Those who are conducting the trustee debate want to sentence women to homes by closing down institutions that empower women.”
