Workshop in Heseke: “Every woman whose heart beats for freedom should fight and defend her country”

The Women's Consultation Workshop in Hesekê continues.

The Women's Consultation Workshop organised by the North-East Syrian women’s movement Kongra Star in Hesekê continues with speeches. The workshop, organised under the slogan ‘We will build a democratic Syria through the unity of women’, is attended by a total of 500 participants from Damascus, Aleppo and Suweida, as well as Kurdish, Arab, Syriac, Assyrian, Alawite and Armenian women.

Addressing the participants, Corcêt Bersûm, spokesperson of the Syriac Women's Union in Syria, pointed out that Syriac women are the daughters of the 6,700-year-old Syriac-Assyrian people and that they have been subjected to massacres and genocides for centuries.

Speaking about the struggle of women in North and East Syria, Corcêt Bersûm said: “Women are announcing their own struggle and the struggle of peoples to the world with their own ideas. As North-East Syrian women, we have fought hard against the male-dominated mentality, paid heavy prices and achieved many gains. We will protect the legacy of struggle left by our martyrs. In this country, the blood of Kurds, Syriacs and Arabs is intermingled in every inch of North and East Syria. Women are based on the philosophy of ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadi’ (Woman, Life, Freedom). Freedom cannot be realised with male ideas. The oppression of minorities, attacks on places of worship, burning down of Christmas trees, and the imposition of veiling show that we the Christian women are facing a great crisis.”

Corcêt Bersûm emphasised the importance of women's power in the new era of Syria and noted that the women of North and East Syria can convey their experience and expertise to all Syrian women. She pointed out that the goals of all women are one and that the struggle must continue for the realisation of these goals.

Speaking after, YPJ (Women’s Protection Units) General Command member Rohilat Efrîn sent greetings to the fighters on the front lines at Tisrin Dam and Qereqozaq Bridge.

Rojhilat Efrîn drew attention to the fact that Syria, mainly the northern and eastern parts, the Middle East, and the world are going through historic times of destiny.

“Syrian women will win their freedom,” Rojhilat Efrîn said, adding, “With this meeting, we send our message to all women, we make sure that we will get rid of the jihadist patriarchy.”

Commending the resistance of YPJ and SDF fighters against the attacks, Rojhilat Efrîn said, “We are facing a new genocide with the mentality governing Syria. For this reason, women's self-defence is important. Every woman whose heart beats for freedom should come to fight and defend her country.”

The YPJ commander called on all women to join the defence forces.
