229 Iranian lawyers call for a halt to Muradi, Azizi, and Muhammadi's executions

229 Iranian lawyers have called on the judiciary to halt the executions of Warisha Muradi, Pakshan Azizi, and Sharifa Muhammadi in a joint letter.

229 Iranian lawyers sent a joint letter to the Iranian judiciary opposing the death sentences of Warisha Muradi, Pakshan Azizi, and Sharifa Muhammadi.

The letter emphasized the necessity of stopping the death sentences and reassessing the cases.

The letter said: "The death sentences imposed on these three women violate not only Islamic, humanitarian, and human rights standards but also international legal norms concerning the right to life in Iran. These sentences will harm national unity and fuel sentiments of discrimination."

The lawyer representing political prisoner Pakshan Azizi, Amir Reisiyan, confirmed on 8 January 2025, that the Iranian Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence against his client. He also stated that the court rejected the defense’s submitted documents.

Additionally, the death sentence for Warisha Muradi, issued during court hearings on 16 June and 4 October 2024, was officially communicated to her lawyers.

The Defense Committee for Sharifa Muhammadi said that the political prisoner had been sentenced to death once again on 13 February. During the retrial process, it was revealed that the death sentence against Muhammadi was upheld by Mohammad Ali Derwêş Goftar, the head of the Second Chamber of the Rasht Revolutionary Court in Iran.

Muhammadi, a 45-year-old women's rights activist from the city of Urmia, was tried in 2023 on charges of "anti-state propaganda" and sentenced to death by the Iranian regime's Revolutionary Court on 4 July 2024. However, the ruling was overturned on 12 December 2024. With the latest ruling, the death sentence has once again been upheld.
