As part of the global campaign for ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question’, a series of events were organised by civil society organisations in Catalonia.

In the autonomous Region of Murcia, the ‘Women Defend Rojava’ Committee organised a remarkable action as part of the campaign. In all living areas of Murcia city, the residents carrying the ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ campaign banner in their hands took photographs. From old to young, from labourers to shopkeepers, an album was created from the photos taken by many people with the banner of the international campaign. The women then published this photo album with dozens of people on social media with the signature ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’.

The La Rioja branch of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), the most important trade union movement in the Aragon region, issued a statement on the global campaign. Olga Belenguer de Echave, General Secretary of CGT La Rioja, stated that they support the ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ campaign, which seeks a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question.

Olga Echave mentioned the importance of participation in the campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, which has gathered many trade unions, social organisations, political parties, artists and intellectual activists under its umbrella, and explained the dimensions of the absolute isolation of Abdullah Öcalan, which disregards all human rights laws. Olga Echave emphasised that for a peaceful solution, the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan must be lifted and he must regain his freedom as soon as possible. ‘Abdullah Öcalan's freedom means a politically just and peaceful solution’, she said.

The Arran Youth Organisation of the Catalan Pro-Independence Left declared their support for the global campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and condemned the attitude of international institutions that do not take action against the silence against absolute isolation. Noting that Abdullah Öcalan was kidnapped to Turkey 25 years ago through an international conspiracy, the Youth Organisation stated that Öcalan has been kept in isolation during this period of time and under ‘absolute isolation’ for about 5 years.

The Arran Youth Organisation strongly criticised the failure of international institutions to take action against the absolute isolation imposed by the Turkish state against Abdullah Öcalan and said: “We condemn the NATO, Spain and France states that remain silent against the absolute isolation against Abdullah Öcalan and the attacks against the Kurdish people and make this possible with their attitude. And we say ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’.”
