In addition to the humanitarian challenges caused by nine years of war, Rojava /North and East Syria lack basic equipment and medicines necessary to test for and treat diseases.
Kurdish Red Crescent Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê calls for the solidarity of the international community and asks for donations for the fight against the corona virus. In the autonomous region of North and East Syria, there is a lack of everything.
The appeal by Heyva Sor includes the following:
“Coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread rapidly in the Middle East and the world. With cases in Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey, and one of the world’s largest outbreaks in Iran, Syria is at high risk for an outbreak.
North and East Syria/Rojava faces unique dangers. The recent Turkish attacks have led to additional instability and other risk factors. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people living in camps across the regions are uniquely vulnerable to this disease.
As in other countries, authorities in Rojava have taken steps to stop the spread of the virus: curfews, bans on public gatherings, shutdowns of non-essential businesses, and closures of schools and universities.
However, despite these measures, Rojava /North and East Syria is still under serious threat. In addition to the humanitarian challenges caused by nine years of war, they lack basic equipment and medicines necessary to test for and treat diseases. A lack of ventilators, masks, proper cleaning agents, and testing equipment is particularly dangerous in this critical time.
The Health Commission of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has sent a request for support to all international bodies and organizations dealing with health issues, including the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the European Union. We reiterate the need for international support for the Autonomous Administration in its efforts to fight this pandemic.
In addition, we call on all people to help Rojava to meet the needs of the hundreds of thousands of people at risk: food, medical devices, medicines, and cleaning supplies. Your support will help limit and control this global epidemic, and prevent loss of life.”
