Çiftyürek: Öcalan’s freedom essential for a lasting peace

DEM Party Van MP Sinan Çiftyürek said that to achieve a lasting peace, it is crucial to ensure the freedom of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Following the recent family meeting that DEM Party Ömer Öcalan had with the Kurdish people's leader, DEM Party Van MP Sinan Çiftyürek spoke to ANF. He said: "Kurdish politics, along with the people and women, has been actively working for four years to lift the isolation and facilitate dialogue. Over the past year, both the Kurdish community and their allies in other parts of Kurdistan and Europe have worked hard to achieve this.

They are resolute in their determination to permanently eradicate this injustice and lawlessness. The meeting with Ömer Öcalan represents the first step in overcoming isolation. We are essentially talking about restoring a legally protected right that has been unlawfully taken away. From now on, the isolation must be permanently lifted to allow for regular meetings between Mr. Abdullah Öcalan and his family and lawyers, enabling him to share his political views and proposals with the public.

The state and the People's Alliance government should not approach this issue with short-term tactics focused solely on managing immediate threats."

"Mr. Öcalan must have regular meetings with his lawyers"

Commenting on Abdullah Öcalan’s message, in which he said that he can lead the process toward a political solution if the appropriate conditions arise, Çiftyürek stated: "Mr. Öcalan’s message holds great significance. The priority must be for him to have immediate and regular meetings with his lawyers to accurately convey his perspectives and proposals. When he says, ‘if the conditions are right,’ what exactly does he mean? What do these ‘conditions’ entail from both the Kurdish and state viewpoints? What steps must the state take regarding the Kurdish issue to ensure a response from diverse Kurdish political entities, enabling Mr. Öcalan to play a constructive role? These critical questions can only be answered if Mr. Öcalan shares his insights."

Çiftyürek further emphasized that for the process to advance positively, it is essential to facilitate Mr. Öcalan’s physical freedom.
