Protests in front of Esenyurt Municipality

Protests are taking place in front of the municipality in Istanbul's Esenyurt district, which has been sealed off by the police after the CHP mayor Ahmet Özer was sent to prison and the Turkish Ministry of the Interior appointed a trustee in his place.

Protests continue against the arrest of the Esenyurt district mayor, Ahmet Özer, and the appointment of a state trustee by the Turkish Minister of the Interior to manage the municipality. The CHP has called for a protest demonstration in front of the Esenyurt municipality and announced that 411 mayors from the party across Turkey will attend the demonstration. The DEM Party and the Workers' Party TIP are also taking part in the protest actions.

The DEM executive committee also called for a gathering at 16:00 local time today. Because the square in front of the municipality was cordoned off by the police with bars, the protests are now to be relocated to the nearby Republic Square, where masses have already started to gather.

Kurdish CHP politician Ahmet Özer was elected mayor of Esenyurt seven months ago. He was arrested yesterday as an alleged member of a terrorist organization, wrongly accused of having ties to the PKK.
